Texas sea turtles increasingly riddled with tumors

Veterinarian Tim Tristan of the Texas SeaLife Center says the number and size of aggressive tumors on sea turtles in the area has increased dramatically over the past five years. Fibropapillomatosis, caused by a sea turtle herpes virus thought to be transmitted by marine leeches, involves lesions around the eyes, head, and underside of the turtles, and Dr. Tristan surgically removes as many of the growths as possible, allowing the turtles to be released if the tumors don’t recur.Corpus Christi Caller-Times (Texas) (tiered subscription model) (2/13)
