Tiny, teeming world found within elephant footprints

German researchers published a study in the African Journal of Ecology that illuminated the tiny ecosystems thriving in elephant footprints. Researchers found at least 61 microinvertebrate species from nine orders in the prints that had filled with water, and they say the work underscores the elephants’ importance in biodiversity and the ecological threat posed by poaching.Scientific American magazine (11/2016)
