Backyard poultry linked to multistate Salmonella outbreak

Between Jan. 4 and May 11, 324 people in 35 states were sickened by salmonella, and over 90% of those interviewed reported recent contact with backyard poultry. Hospitalization was required in 66 cases, and one person died, although the death may have been unrelated to the infection. Birds involved in the outbreak came from multiple hatcheries, according to the CDC, and cases are expected to continue to surface.
