Alaska bison calves spotted after reintroduction

Wild wood bison calves were spotted in western Alaska, a mark of success after last year’s reintroduction of 130 captive wood bison by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Wood bison are native to the region but disappeared from Alaska over a century ago. Scientists involved with the restoration were concerned the animals would be unable to find one another or would have trouble fending for themselves after being reared close to humans, but most of the animals initially released are still alive.
