Veterinarian Jeff Kahler writes that 90% of the health problems he sees in avian patients can be traced back to poor nutrition. It is best to feed birds a diet modeled after how wild birds of their species eat. For a new macaw, which is an omnivore, Dr. Kahler recommends a diet that is mostly in the form of pellets, supplemented with vegetables, a small amount of fruit, occasional seeds, small amounts of grain products and even some meat.
