Ban salamander imports to save U.S. population, scientists say

In a paper published in the journal Science, researchers called on the Fish and Wildlife Service to ban imports of live salamanders to prevent the spread of a deadly fungus that could decimate the North American salamander population. “This is an imminent threat, and a place where policy could have a very positive effect,” said San Francisco State University biologist Vance Vredenburg, an author on the paper. “We actually have a decent chance of preventing a major catastrophe.” The Guardian (London) (7/31), U.S. News & World Report/HealthDay News (7/30)
