Blending cat and dog families? Proceed with caution

Bringing together households with cats and dogs can be complicated, and extra care is required to avoid injuries, writes veterinarian and animal behavior specialist Jeff Nichol, addressing a question about a dog with a tendency to run after small animals. It’s vital to provide cats with a safe space to escape, and the dog should be well-exercised, Dr. Nichol writes, urging the owner to stay vigilant. “[D]ogs who appear to have learned respect for cats can suddenly lose their impulse control with tragic results,” he adds, suggesting professional help may be in order.
