Veterinarians with Saving the Survivors, a group dedicated to helping rhinos injured by poachers in South Africa, have been treating Hope, a 4-year-old female whose horns were hacked off by poachers. She suffered broken bones and a 20-by-11-inch wound. The veterinarians have treated 10 other rhinos and are accumulating information about the species’ anatomy and response to pain medications and anesthesia. Over 1,200 rhinos were poached in South Africa last year, according to the government. Hope is “a voice for what the species is going through,” said veterinarian William Fowlds, who helped with the procedure. U.S. News & World Report/The Associated Press (6/9)
