Study: Western gray whale sets record for mammal migration

A female western gray whale traveled 13,988 miles, or 22,511 kilometers, from Russia to Mexico and back in what researchers say is the longest mammal migration ever recorded. The whale, tagged with monitoring devices, made the trip in 172 days. “She crossed the Bering Sea, the Gulf of Alaska [and] the lengths of the North American continent to get down to the Baja breeding calf lagoons that are used by eastern North Pacific animals,” said Bruce Mate, lead researcher of the study published online in Biology Letters.
