Barbiturate-contaminated horse meat tied to sanctuary animal deaths

Meat contaminated by barbiturates that apparently killed two animals at a sanctuary and sickened another came from a euthanized horse. The company that supplied the meat — Triple A Brand Meat Co. — recalled the product, which was disseminated to 10 zoos and sanctuaries. The company uses meat from animals that die of natural causes and is working with suppliers to ensure the incident is isolated, according to company partner Lindy Yager, who said her team is “heartbroken” over the cases.
