USDA identifies avian influenza in small Oregon flock

A “backyard” flock of about 100 birds in Oregon has tested positive for H5N8 avian influenza. H5N8 has also been found in a captive gyrfalcon in Washington state, and H5N2 was detected there as well as in British Columbia. The infection seems to be moving south with migratory birds along the West Coast, which means infection near the southeastern U.S., the highest concentration of commercial poultry operations, is unlikely.
