“Puzzling” tuberculosis results reported in Oregon Zoo elephant

Tusko, a 44-year-old male elephant at the Oregon Zoo, tested positive for tuberculosis bacteria with a trunk wash but does not have antibodies to tuberculosis. “The results are puzzling,” said elephant curator Bob Lee. “Tusko appears to be in fine health and is acting normally. But we want to take every precaution and get to the bottom of this.” Two other elephants at the zoo are being treated for tuberculosis and have not developed any symptoms.
