Therapeutic Laser is Here!

I am now able to use a low level therapy laser to augment treatments of pain, inflammation, and healling. Call and see if your pet could benefit from this, especially in geriatric patients that may have conditions such as arthritis.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

What is LLLT?

Laser is defined as Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. LLLT is application of low energy, coherent, monochromatic focused light to tissue, which stimulates cellular processes, thus enhancing biochemical reactions. These reactions result in increasing production of ATP, a cellular energy product. The cell utilizes the increased fuel to function more efficiently.

How does LLLT work?

The photonic energy emitted from the laser is absorbed by the chromophores (photon receptor sites) on the cell membranes. This triggers a secondary messenger to initiate a cascade of intracellular signals that initiate, inhibit, or accelerate biological processes such as wound healing, inflammation and pain management.

How does this “Star Trek” medicine benefit patients?

It causes an increase in cellular regeneration due to ATP production, and increases cellular communication.

Proposed biologic effects of LLLT:

  1. cellular      level: repairs mitochondrial DNA and mRNA
  2. organ      level: cells heal, metabolism is corrected, organ resumes function
  3. symptomatic      effect: as organ resumes function, symptoms decrease
  4. therapeutic      level: healing occurs, thus need for therapy decreases

LLLT can be used as an adjunct to other types of neuronal modulation such as rehabilitation at the spinal level using acupuncture, chiropractic; at the connective tissue level with deep tissue massage, and at the cellular level using LLLT to recharge the cells. LLLT can be done at the nerve root as well as the direct area of involvement.

Conditions that may benefit from LLLT:

Any condition that would benefit from improved circulation, decreased inflammation, and decreased pain.
